Kush’s ‘The music that captured me’
Kush(Real name Kim Byunghoon, 25 yrs old) is a member of Stony Skunk with four full-length albums, and is an experienced musician. Right now he is active as an essential composer and producer in YG Entertainment along with Teddy. Kush, who’s only in his mid-twenties, has participated in many ‘popular’ singer’s song’s such as Gummy(’Sorry’ Lyrics-Composing), Taeyang(’Only Look at Me’ Lyrics-Composing done with Teddy), Um Junghwa(’DISCO’ Lyrics-Composing done with Teddy), Daesung(’Look at Me Gwisoon’, Composing done with G-Dragon), Bigbang’s Second Album, 2NE1’s First Mini Album etc. This straightforwardly proves that he has made his ‘brand name’ firm regardless of the quality of his songs. Kush, who’s working on 2NE1’s Second Mini Album that’s planning to be released in November day and night, answered all the questions while coughing and said, “Sorry. Because my days and nights are swapped up, I catch colds easily”.
In his ‘Stony Skunk’ days Kush was a rapper that did the rough reggae. However Kush who’s transformed into a creator has become a creator that creates soft and pop-like music. About this change he said, “During my group days, where I did more of the ‘rough’ music, I still and pop sentiments with me. It’s only now that I’ve been able to express that”. This means that he’s a very efficient producer that can produce the most suitable music for the singer. The unique thing about his composing is that he puts in a slight ‘change’ in the similar singer’s characteristics to avoid the obvious and common composing. His masterpieces, that come out from his sensitivity, usually are from his past experiences; but sometimes a melody pops right in his head before he goes to bed, or while he’s sleeping, and he writes the song out right away. But wouldn’t he still feel some limitations to all the work? “Stevie Wonder kept making songs. I don’t think that the songs I’ve made right now are perfect or good, but I think that I can progress rather than feeling that I’m at my limits. There are a lot of songs I’ve worked on, and there are a lot of things I have to do in the future.”
Kush’s this week’s ‘Musician’s Choice’ had a theme that we never had thought of. It was surprising enough that a guy in the twenties, that is sensitive to the trend, had a ‘deep attachment’ to old music, but it was even more surprising to see that he practically praised the music. “Right now a lot of the pop musicians in the States try to reinterpret the songs from the 70s with new instruments. For me, I really enjoyed listening to the music in the 60s and 70s because of my dad. So, gradually I tried to mix the analogue and digital styles together.” He who has ‘review the old and learn the new’ philosophy and the passion to lead Korea’s mainstream music, will have a walk of life that’s will be a ‘Never Ending Story’.
Last two paragraphs
“I want to become a musician that doesn’t forget my roots, but also a musician that can comfort the public’s mood”
The biggest reason why Kush wanted to introduce all this old music was to ‘not forget his roots’. “I think there’s a reason why even the most popular musicians in the States still listen to these songs. I am also touched by listening to this kind of music, so wouldn’t it be because of that ’something’ that touches you?’
Kush’s main goal for his music is ‘warmth’, even though he also does like ‘cold’ music such as electronic or house music. So to not lose his analogue sentiment while using digital sound sources, he thinks of his old memories again. I got curious about Stony Stunk’s next album because we haven’t seen them since September 2007. Kush mentioned, “That’s something we have to discuss about after Skull comes back from the army.” He emphasized, “The most important thing is the fact that I’m doing music, regardless of where I’m doing it. There are occasions where I do the music that I want to do; but I also want to make music that can comfort the feelings of the people who are listening to it. So I hope that everyone that listens to my music feels happy.”

[Between The Sheets]

oh Kush…I can’t hate you.
Here’s a rough Google translation, LOL:
-Kush, 25, the other half of the reggae duo StonySkunk
-Something about how he’s now with Teddy
-in YG working as a composer and producer.
-He has a cycle of day and night shifts; catches cold easily
-Something about his father’s influence on his music taste
-Found the Isley Brother’s album very lurioux.
-Let’s Get It On, he says the lyrics are so beautiful
-Earth, Wind, & Fire. He listened to as a kid.
-Stevie Wonder. Kush really loves this album.
Last Kush quote: “I want to do music. I’m meant to listen to people’s feelings. I want the music. I wish I could hear everyone’s happiness.”
Oh Hey it’s Kush!!
Thanks for the very rough translation Nai but am happy..
Lovin’ his choice of music..
Someone smiling up up there above you Nai..

Thanks Michelle for the heck long interview..
Kush is just a few years older than me but i see three artist him and I truly have in common.Marvin Gaye,Stevie Wonder and Earth,Wind and Fire. That is soulful style music that I rarely hear from mainstream K-pop music. The very foundation of R&B and break off from Blues.
I don’t get how reggae consider “rough” I thought rock was more rough.Only for them since they are not from the island and have to inmate being Korean and all.Okay I see how it can be “rough” music genre.
I like this article shine some light on Kush that I did not know before simply because it wasn’t translated.Kush has gotten my seal of approval. That brother has got some soul in him.^_^
I wonder what influence Teddy but I have I though Def Jam.Method Man,Warren G,Cypress Hill,Wu Tang Clan,Onyx lol
